Math/Science Scholarships
Carthage awards two full-tuition per year Math/Science Scholarships each year to incoming students. These scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate ability in mathematics and natural sciences, and are renewable for four years.
The Math/Science Scholarship deadline has passed for fall 2025 freshmen. Join our mailing list to receive more information and updates about Carthage scholarships.
Carthage offers a variety of majors and programs in the natural sciences, preparing students for careers in health care, research, teaching, and business. The close-knit community of faculty and students stems naturally from our liberal arts atmosphere and is deepened through the activities of hands-on science. In addition to submitting the scholarship application, you must also apply for admission.
The Majors
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Data Science
- Environmental Science
- Game Development
- Geographic Information Science
- Geoscience
- Mathematics
- Neuroscience
- Physics
If you are interested in Engineering, you should apply for the Engineering Scholarship, instead.
The Second Round
The Math/Science Scholarship Program second-round takes place as a hybrid event (on-campus and remote options) in February. Students will be notified in late December if selected to participate. If selected, candidates attending the event will take a comprehensive written examination, choosing four of the following six subject areas that assess your scientific literacy: biology, chemistry, computer science, geoscience, mathematics, and physics. Parents are invited to join their students during the interactive session to learn more about the benefits of a math/science education at Carthage.
How to Apply
Candidates interested in the Math/Science Scholarship Program must complete the following no later than December 3:
- Submit an application for admission to Carthage and supporting materials (high school transcripts).
- Submit the Math/Science Scholarship Application. (available in mid-September 2025; join our mailing list to receive updates)
- Submit a one-page essay: Explain why you are interested in mathematics and/or natural sciences (This is part of the online scholarship application.)
To apply for a math/science scholarship, candidates must intend to major in biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, game development, geographic information science, geoscience, mathematics, neuroscience, or physics. (A double major in another subject area is acceptable and can typically be completed in four years.)
Application Review
The math/science faculty and the Office of Admissions will review your application and high school grades. Qualified applicants will be notified in late December. Successful candidates and their families will be invited to the Math/Science Scholarship Program second round.
The Math/Science Scholarships incorporate all Carthage assistance. Scholarships and grants may be combined with federal and state grants, not to exceed full tuition. Carthage also offers additional scholarships. See our scholarship page for details.
